HONOLULU, Oct. 15 (UPI) -- A strong earthquake measured at 6.3 on the Richter Scale shook the Hawaiian islands early Sunday morning, the U.S. Geological Survey said.
The quake was centered about 9 miles west of Kailua Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii, some 15 miles under the Pacific, and 155 miles southeast of Honolulu.
Broadcast reports said electrical power was disrupted in Kona and other areas of the islands. The Kona Community Hospital reported damage, KITV, Honolulu reported.
Landslides reportedly blocked several roads.
The tremor was monitored by the U.S. Geological Survey, Hawaiian Volcano Observatory in Hawaii National Park.
The jolt hit at 7:07 a.m. and was followed several strong to mild aftershocks measured at between 5.8 and 2.5 that were felt 60 miles away in Hilo, Hawaii, but there was no tsunami warning.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said the quake was the largest in Hawaii since 1983, KITV said.
